Welcome to the

Academy Learning Community (ALC)

at Pinkerton Academy.

Housed on campus at 31 Tsienneto Road, the primary focus of The Academy Learning Community is to accommodate students in their second year and beyond seeking an alternative option to Pinkerton's main campus. This program is specifically designed for students to recover credits and for independent learners who thrive in a smaller environment.  The ALC program helps students to achieve their personalized goals while also facilitating their academic success as Pinkerton students. The goal for all ALC students is to earn a Pinkerton Diploma, whether through ALC, Adult Diploma, or Pinkerton's main campus.

Credits are earned through self-paced courses using the Edmentum Platform, as well as community-based programs and in-person classes taught by ALC/adjunct instructors.  Students attend an assigned 3-hour session and are required to do 15 hours of work and/or volunteering per week, or they must take classes in another setting in addition to the ALC.  The ALC meets according to the Pinkerton Academy School Calendar.

Students interested in attending ALC must schedule an appointment with their school counselor.

About Us

Our ALC staff for the 2025-2026 school year includes our coordinators, Stephanie Carberry and Eric Idelson, and our Program Aide, Mary Lu Petty. In addition to the full-time staff at ALC, we have adjunct teachers to support our students in Science, English, and Math. A school counselor is available for all students.

At the ALC, many of our classes are offered on the Edmentum Platform. Unlike the traditional classroom, Edmentum offers a self-paced online course system that allows students to complete their required coursework at their own pace on a computer. Because of this, students can accelerate the time it takes to graduate, catch up on credits, and/or graduate on time (within 4 years).

Edmentum courses typically require between 40 to 60 hours of instruction, mastery activities, post-tests, and projects, depending on the specific course. The program tracks this work through progress percentages, which are updated in real time. Both students and teachers monitor these percentages daily to ensure consistent progress toward course completion (100%). Families also have access to live progress updates and can monitor their student's performance in real time.  For more information on Edmentum, you can visit their website:  https://www.edmentum.com/products/courseware/

In addition to courses completed on the Edmentum Platform, students enrolled in the ALC are required to participate in a Community class worth .25 elective credits. This class is centered around group collaboration, individual goal-setting, and personal learning experiences.

The ALC also offers a variety of in-person classes in Math, English, and Science. In-person offerings always depend on the needs of our ALC population, and all students participate in these courses unless they have already earned that specific credit.

To ensure the ALC remains the right fit for each student, a minimum course completion rate must be maintained each semester. To keep their placement at the ALC, students are required to complete at least 2.5 credits per semester, which includes finishing 3–4 Edmentum courses and 1–2 in-person classes.

Due to the structure at ALC, specific procedures have been put in place that are unique to the program. These procedures are designed to create an atmosphere conducive to learning.  Students attending ALC must agree to follow all Pinkerton Academy policies as well as the ALC procedures.  For a complete list of Pinkerton Academy policies, please refer to the Pinkerton Academy  Student Handbook.

Students who drive to ALC may park in the student parking area at ALC.  Students park at their own risk. Pinkerton will not assume responsibility for theft, vandalism, or damage to student vehicles or their contents while they are parked or driven on school property.  Students are reminded that the campus parking lots are considered part of the safe school zone at Pinkerton Academy. The campus-wide prohibitions against weapons, alcohol, drugs, and contraband apply to student vehicles that are parked in campus parking lots. Students who park on campus do so with the understanding that their vehicle may be subject to search by an administrator upon suspicion that the vehicle contains items that are prohibited on campus.

Parking on school property is not a “right”; it is a privilege, and those who drive to school should respond by practicing reason, safety, and courtesy. Any student attending ALC who wishes to park at ALC must have an ALC parking permit (no cost) and must display it at all times that the vehicle is on school property. Students may only park at ALC while attending class at ALC.   These permits may be obtained by completing an application.  As part of the application, students must provide a current driver's license and valid car registration.

The Academy reserves the right to restrict parking, as the number of parking spaces may be fewer than the number of permit requests. For additional information, refer to the rules and regulations distributed with the parking permits.

Attendance

We understand that many students attend the ALC because they have faced challenges with attendance on the main campus. To support their academic success, we have established the attendance procedures outlined below.

Each ALC session is three hours in length. Tardiness significantly impacts a student’s learning by causing them to miss valuable instructional time and support.

Because ALC is designed to maintain small session sizes to provide personalized attention, space is limited and cannot accommodate all students who apply. If a student demonstrates excessive attendance issues or is not making productive use of their time, we may need to reassign that spot to another student on the waiting list.

If a staff member, parent, or student believes that a different attendance procedure would better support an individual student’s success, any exception must be formally documented in the student’s Alternative Education Plan

Students interested in the A.L.C. Program should schedule an appointment with their school counselor.

If you are currently enrolled in A.L.C., please contact the program directly for questions and for attendance purposes.
