Weekly Update 4/12/24

April 12th, 2024 by Mike Perez

Pinkerton Families and Friends,

It seems like Spring is finally here and the nice warm weather is hopefully here to stay.  We are a week away from April Vacation Week.  This past weekend I had the opportunity to participate in the annual Astrothon sponsored by the Student Council.  It is an overnight event here at Pinkerton in which 122 students and a dozen faculty members participated in hourly events to raise money for the Boston Children’s Hospital.  It was such a fun night and an amazing event.

This week I would like to share about the Pinkerton Academy English Department. Supervised by the Associate Dean of Academics for English, Jyoti Demian, the department is made up of 34 dedicated teachers.  The English Department at Pinkerton Academy believes that a comprehensive four-year language arts program is important for all students, helping them to develop the necessary skills for success after high school.  Developing effective communication skills enhances our students' abilities to engage in a diverse world, both professionally and personally.

Students are provided with many opportunities to develop skills essential for proficient writing, reading, researching, speaking, listening, and critical thinking through their four years at Pinkerton. Every student selects from a range of mandatory courses categorized into AP, Honors, A, B, C, Explorations, or Foundations levels. This choice is determined by factors such as academic performance, future educational objectives, personal drive, commitment to academic excellence, educator recommendations, and parental support. The purpose of this system is to both challenge students' abilities and assist with their progression towards higher levels of achievement. Furthermore, students are encouraged to pursue different interests by enrolling in elective courses.

Over and over we hear from graduates about how well their English classes prepared them for life beyond Pinkerton. Whether they go onto college or enter the workforce, they have developed the skills they need to succeed. We are grateful for the challenging but supportive culture the English department offers to all of our students as they work toward their future goals.

Weekly Highlights:

Access Control:  More buildings continue to be brought online for our access control. We strongly encourage students to have their ID cards with them at all times. As all buildings are brought online and we head into the next school year, it will be required for students looking to enter a secured building.

Spanish Exchange:  The World Language department is looking for families to host 21 students from Spain. The exchange will take place from September 21-26, 2024. Students who host will be given the first opportunity to travel to Spain in June of 2025 for 2 weeks to complete the exchange.
